Fall Foods and Probiotics to Boost Immunity

As the fun and mayhem of summer wind down and kids head back to school, the whole family settles into another type of routine. Days become busy with work, school, and sports. With all this is going on, remember, It's important to nourish yourself as well. This month the doctors at the Golgi Clinic wish to share some simple dietary suggestions to help make the transition into autumn a smooth one.
You guessed it! What kind of naturopathic physicians would we be, if we didn't start with vegetables? Veggies offer one of the best ways to reverse the effects of stress, through their varied and amazing antioxidants. By steaming vegetables, we're assured the utmost amount of nutrients from our foods. These vital nutrients are crucial to the repair of the gastro-intestinal mucosal layer. And did you know this? A healthy intestinal mucosa increases the absorption of nutrients, improves immunity, and even promotes better mood. Wow! All that in a parsnip!
When shopping for vegetables, think all the colors of the rainbow. By incorporating brilliant yellows, red, oranges, and purples into your meals, your diet is more to likely gain the balance, variety, and nourishment you want. In addition, we also encourage our patients to try and eat the lower carbohydrate vegetables (3-6%). These vegetables tend to better stabilize our blood sugars and keep us satiated longer. (see right)
So we have our gorgeous, vibrant steamed vegetables all ready. What should we serve them over? Good question. At the Golgi Clinic, we're huge fans of quinoa. Quin-what!? Quinoa, a grain indigenous to the Andean regions of South America, has been revered for its high protein source due to containing all twenty essential amino acids. A nutty, refreshing flavor, quinoa may be the newest addition to many households this year. Other healthy grains to consider include: amaranth, buckwheat, millet, and basmati or brown rice.
