Allergies, Asthma & the Essential Breath

We’ve all been there. When cutting the grass, hiking or gardening, our nose begins to drip, and we sneeze uncontrollably.
There is a sense of predictability to these reactions. They seem to occur when plant pollination is at it’s height. But what is really going on? Why do some seem more reactive than others. Why do some people seem to feel worse during the Spring, though they aren’t sneezing or experiencing “typical” allergies?
There are many possible explanations. The first is a mucosal boundary compromise. This occurs in the nose, lungs or gut. When the body identifies an object in the nose or lungs, such as pollen, that isn’t self, a reaction such as flushing, hives, rashes, sneezing or a runny nose ensues.
When a non-self object is found in the gut a very different reaction occurs. People find themselves much more lethargic, riddles with headaches, stiffness or bowel distress.
The causes are the same. The body is no longer able to separate self from non-self. Boundaries are compromised. There may be just one reaction or a host of afflictions. Some are typically known as seasonal allergies. The other reactions are more difficult to diagnose and can be untreated for years.
When mistreated or suppressed, allergies, a benign process in the body, may later manifest as a more destructive process such as asthma or ulcers.
So what to do about it? The answer is seemingly simple--correct the boundaries.
Allergy shots and plant-based anti-histamines may be a no-brainer for many physicians when dealing with allergies, there is another perspective. Rather than focus on the suppression of symptoms, the Golgi Clinic doctors start their patients on simple, effective basic treatment guidelines (BTGs). The BTGs begin to address disharmonies of each main organ system, allowing return of balance, or “homeostasis.”
In time these everyday practices help to not only address the patient’s initial symptoms, but often go beyond to correct the imbalance without any heavy-duty or expensive medications.
For each person, the course of treatment varies. Our philosophy of medicine serves to reestablish homeostasis by looking beyond symptom complaints and diagnosis to the more expansive picture of what makes each one of us unique. Because the best doctor is within.
